August 2012 Coastal Angler Report

The extremely warm water temperatures in August will bring numerous sharks and huge barracuda on to the near shore reefs. Abundant bait schools driven by Spanish and King mackerel will start to appear on the surface as the month progresses. This combination of fish and bait will lead to some explosive action as the sharks and cuda move in on the mackerel you just hooked. You have a good chance at gag grouper as well as mangrove snapper fishing the bottom. Theads, pins and cut squid and sardines, or shrimp are all good baits. Along the beaches, especially near the passes, look for big snook. They will be crusing the beach, usually inside the sand bar feeding on small bait fish. Good reports of huge sea trout being caught in Big Carlos Pass the end of July and should continue through August. Father into the backwaters you can expect to have good mangrove snapper and red fish action.
August is a slow month in South West Florida and the local business could use your help.  If you are on the south end Bonita Beach  and need bait, ice or beer stop in Fish Trap Marina. Talk to Capt. John, Capt. Kent or Jim and find out where the fish are and book a charter. If you're on the north end of Hickory Island check out the guys at Big Hickory Fishing Nook Marina for your fishing needs and book a charter, I heard Capt Mike on the Ramble On could put you on the red fish. A bit further north, located at Carl Johnson Boat Ramp you have  Lovers Key Bait Shop with a good selection of tackle and plenty of bait with easy access by boat or car. On the south end of Ft. Myers Beach, Fish Tale Marina has your bait and a great ships store. Check out Salt Water Pro Shop at Getaway Marina for live bait.Call in advance for large orders of pins.  Bait N Wait next to the Fire Station on San Carlos has a large selection of tackle and live bait as well. Then there is Fisherman's World on San Carlos near Summerlin. They offer exceptional rod and reel repair and handle a wide assortment of live and artificial baits and tackle.
Capt. Lindy Yow has fished the waters from North Naples to Ft. Myers Beach since 1993 gaining an extensive knowledge of the near shore reefs and the areas back waters.
